Louis Magnus Skogquist was born to Catharina & Lars Skogquist on Dec. 17, 1866, in Backalund, Värmland, Sweden. The oldest of four children, he came to America and directly to Gladstone in 1892, when forests still covered a major part of the point.
He worked as a blacksmith and millwright for the Mason Mill on the point and then at the Pittsburgh Coal Dock. •until his
retirement in 1937, he spent 37 years with Northwestern Cooperage and Lumber Company.
Louis married Karolina Olsson who was born Jan. 25, 1871, in Skogsberg, Värmland, Sweden.
She was one of eight children born to Maria and Olaf Olsson. With her brother, Peter, she came to America
on June 24, 1892, at the age of 21, and lived with a sister, Martha, in Chicago. In December, 1892, she moved to Escanaba where she worked for two years.
